DIY Manicure Tips...

Here are some essential DIY Manicure tips...
Gather all the tools and polishes you need before you begin...

Step 1. Make sure all polish is removed

Step 2. Soak your hands in a warm soapy water for about 5 minutes

Step 3. Cut or File nails to the shape and length desired

Step 4. Push back or cut cuticles (makes the mani look 100 times better when you have well groomed cuticles!)

Step 5. Apply a good hand lotion

Step 6. With a cotton ball dipped in polish remover, go over each nail to make sure there is no moisturizer remaining or the polish will not have staying power

Step 7. Now you are ready for your base coat...I LOVE  Essie First Base. I actually see a distinct difference in the staying power of my polish when I use this base coat.

Step 8. You are ready to polish! My general rule is 2 coats should do it. And try and use 4 strokes (at the top center press brush a bit and drag down center, brush left, right. down the center again and then one across the bottom to seal the polish)  Here is a great tutorial and visual.

Step 9. Wait for a bit before applying your topcoat

Step 10. Finish with a good top coat such as Essie Good To Go

Here are some samples of basic manicures:

Note: If you have any polish that got on the sides of your finger you can take a cotton swab dipped in polish remover and carefully remove.

Good Luck!!! You will be doing your own professional manicures in no time! Feel free to leave me your comments below and ask questions!

Dental Floss Nails

This was a fun and not too difficult design. It has an intricate complicated look, but with a bit of patience it should come out beautiful...

Before you begin you will need:

A good base coat to protect your nails
A polish as a base colour
3 or more accent colours
Dental Flossers
A good top coat to protect your design

Step 1. Make sure your nails are clean and dry.

Step 2. You can follow steps 1 to 6 HERE

Step 3. Apply 2 coats of your base colour

Step 4. Brush some polish onto the flosser string...needs to be enough to transfer but not too much that there are gobs of polish dripping off

Step 5. Put flosser to nail and rotate the flosser while lightly pressing to deposit some polish. Do all nails with the first accent colour then move on to next colour

Step 6. repeat with other accent colours

Step 7. Allow your design to dry for a bit and then protect and seal in your design with a good top coat

Winter Wonderland...

A winter wonderland... sometimes I am a bit stumped when it comes to new nail art ideas so I poll my girls. This idea is courtesy of my 6 year old Gabriella!

1. Paint your nails with a good base coat to start

2. Paint your nails a blue color such as Essie Aruba Blue

3. On all fingers except the thumb of one hand, using a striper dipped in white polish, create "snowflakes". You will criss cross lines to form a snowflake.

4. With a dotting tool dipped in silver polish dot the center of the flake

5. To create your snowman, begin by painting a white tip, french style on the tip of your thumb. Then begin to create the snowman by making the body using a stippling motion. (doesn't have to be perfectly smooth circles...ads to the character)

6. Using a dotting tool with black polish make 3 buttons, eyes and a hat

7. Using a small dotting tool dipped in orange polish create a carrot nose

8. Using a red striper or a small dotting tool dipped in red polish create the snowman's flowing scarf

9. Protect your design with a good top coat (always remember to wait a bit before applying a topcoat...to avoid "drag" (smearing) of your design)

Feel free to post a comment below and ask questions...

My Chai Lifeline Poker Nails

Chai Lifeline is a group here in Toronto that helps kids with life threatening illnesses by preparing meals for the family, visiting and assisting in the Hospital, they have a fabulous summer camp and much more. They can be found here: Chai Lifeline Canada

In December of 2013, they had a fundraiser called "Go All In for Chai" which my husband and I attended.

These were the nails I sported!!

1. Paint your nails using a good base coat
2. Paint all but your ring fingers a green polish
3. Paint your ring fingers white
4. Create the diamond and heart with a red polish and a dotting tool. Create the heart by placing three small dots in a triangle shape. Connect the dots to form the heart. Do the same for the diamond making 4 dots in a diamond shape and connecting them and filling in the centres by use of a stippling motion (creating a series of dots to fill the space)
5. With a black polish create your spade and club. The spade is basically a heart with a tail and the spade is three joined dots and a tail.
6. Protect your design with a good top coat and you are done!!

Have fun and take your time!

Purim nail tutorial...Alternative

Get all your nail polishes and tools needed for your design ready and close by.

 1. Paint your clean and dry nails with a good base coat such as Essie First Base
2.  Paint two coats of a neutral nail colour on your thumb and pinky (or any two nails you choose). I used Essie Sand Tropez , but really you can use any neutral color you like.

3.  Begin with your first image with a dotting tool to form the megillah, and continue for the other image of choice. Get creative with the colors...there is no “right” or “wrong”.
 I created a megillah and a  mask.
On the other fingers you will paint a dark colour such as Essie Licorice. Then with a thin silver or gold stripper, paint a line across the nail about 1/3 from the tip of the nail. A tip is to rotate your nail as you hold the stripper brush steady.

4. Wait for about a ½ hour to let the images dry as much as possible.

 5. Protect your design with a good top coat. I use  Essie Good To Go.

Note: The best method for putting on the top coat is to dip the brush into the bottle, wipe gently and then place at the top of the nail and lightly brush downward. It is best to only use 3 strokes (centre, left and right)

Purim nail tutorial...

Purim is a time to have fun with different nails designs and colors! It is an exciting time and a time to get creative...
1.       Get all your nail polishes and tools needed for your design ready and close by.
2,  Paint your clean and dry nails with a good base coat such as Essie First Base http://www.essie.com/Nail-Care/base-coat.aspx#base-coat
3.  Paint two coats of a neutral nail colour. I used Essie Sand Tropez http://www.essie.com/Colors.aspx , but really you can use any lighter color you like.

4.   Begin with your first image with a dotting tool to form the megillah, and continue for the different images of choice. Get creative with the colors...there is no “right” or “wrong”.
I created a megillah, hamentashen, crown, grager and a mask. If you find this too “noisy” you can always choose one image and paint onto only the ring finger.

5.  Wait for about a ½ hour to let the images dry as much as possible.

6.   Protect your design with a good top coat. I use Essie Good To Go http://www.essie.com/Nail-Care/base-coat.aspx#base-coat . I often do my nails at night and go to sleep soon after. This top coat dries really fast so no sheet marks!

Note: The best method for putting on the top coat is to dip the brush into the bottle, wipe gently and then place at the top of the nail and lightly brush downward. It is best to only use 3 strokes (centre, left and right)

Tools Used:
Dotting tool
Thin brush
Plasic bag to mix polishes on
Regular polish brushes
